Surrealism was a artist and intellectual movement founded in 1924, France before spreading across the world. It was deeply influenced by psychoanalysis, both writers and artists tried to tap into the unconscious and repressed mind in order to liberate culture from logic and reason.
It launched across the world by Andre Breton's First Manifesto of Surrealism which describe surrealism as " Psychic automatism in its pure state- by which it is intended to express the true functioning of thought. Thought that is expressed in the absence of any control and outside all moral and aesthetic considerations."
During the 1930's surrealism escaped the bounds of the avant-garde art movement and became more involved with design, transforming the world of theater, design, fashion, film, interiors, architecture and advertising. It was celebrated but for some it went against political principles of the movement.
Due to surrealists unique way of interpreting the world and innovative thinking they transformed the world of art and design.
